Tim:
Maybe 2a attack is better for vocals and 3a is better for bass and guitar?

I general both 2a and 3a comps are great for vocals because of the way the release follows the gain reduction. The way it recovers over a wide gain reduction stops that over crushed sound that you would otherwise get from a static style release.
2a may sound a little more natural but for example rap vocals 3a may work better to capture the quick changes.
For drum bus it sounds more like a compressor and a limiter together. You get the first stage release working with the transients and the second stage controls the overall level
Re: It's Here! OPTO3a Levelling amplifier!!!!!
Thank you Tim!
How do we configure it to work with transients or with the overall level? Using 2a and 3a? Same gain reduction in the two?
Some of them in pararel compression?
Sorry for to much questions, just to now is the filosofy of this presets..
With this you mean using two nebula 3a instances one with the compressor and another one with the limiter? Using only 3a or a combo with 2a comp and 3a limiter for example?Tim Petherick wrote: For drum bus it sounds more like a compressor and a limiter together. Re: It's Here! OPTO3a Levelling amplifier!!!!!
No sorry,
A misunderstanding. What I mean is each preset has a two stage release character like the hardware. Faster release (stage one) is good for capturing peaks. Stage two is a longer pd release that controls the overall signal.
On drums you'll hear this easier because of the the louder transient, then the quieter parts are more controlled by the second stage.
You only need to keep it simple with one preset.
Fast attack use 3a
Slower attack use 2a
I think just play with it and see what you like.

Yes, vocals is defiantly the first place I'd try this comp, it just handles it very well.

No, Problem. I use my own libraries so if I can improve them it's good for everyone!!!
I'm now finding I can use this on many tracks, It seems to work well on everything. The update makes mixing easier. It's even easier to dial in.

Re: It's Here! OPTO3a Levelling amp HUGE update09/07/15
Thanks Tim, grabbed the update. It sounded great to me before, and still does
. I just swapped in the new libs and played a mix that I already had completed. I already had everything dialed in exactly as I wanted it, and happily, it didn't change anything to a degree where I needed to do any tweaking.
Thanks for your ongoing efforts!
PS - I know we are all still basking in the afterglow of this release, but any hints on what is coming next? I have my fingers crossed for one of the most sought after 2 bus compressors (pie, S*L, N**e, A*I, etc)!

There is always a chance that I can. I have to see what comes my way. I need to update sum100a before anything. There Is a rather special unit that came in yesterday, In fact I have two different models. The release times are super long, curcuit is from the year 1954!
