I used ebony just for only 2 hours and I am totally convinced. In brief:

- Ebony is in no way neutral. It is the first Acqua which comes close to the "old" coloring, meaty sound. Until now in my eyes/ears only Tim P.'s and Tim C.'s Nebula progams gave me that sound. Gold and the Caribou series (Prime Studio) also went a bit in that direction, but Ebony is the 1st AA Acqua which nails it. Just mixed a whole song with Ebony only --a lot of Ebony EQ's, Pre's and Comps, Reverb on one FX bus and Ebony on the mix bus - it is THE sound, if you want exactly that!

- The EQs are able to do magic alone. Try out this bassy but balanced fat sound. It is not possible with any other Acqua, yet, imho. And the Comp also can do magic alone. And the reverb also. :D

- With Win10/Cubase9 (normal Intel 4 core CPU) I can insert about 12-15 Ebony EQ/Pre/Comps + 1 Reverb + 1 Ebony Strip, when using a 4096 buffer size (ASIO guard switched on)! I am very happy with that mid-low CPU load.

- I don't know what AA did, but the natural bottom of the original sound is finally there. It is somehow balanced like in my analog desk from the 80s (discrete/LC EQ). You can dial in lots of lows and lots of highs, use an LP filter at 10/12k and voila, you are there.

- This Acqua means a lot to me! It may not be "the modern thing" for modern music. But if you love the sound of the 70s/80s, you should try it and enjoy!

Uuups - maybe "in brief" was not the right word. I'll better stop here ... Giancarlo - if you have other projects going in this direction soundwise, please invest further in them. I am sure there are a lot of people who never heard of AA, but if they test Ebony, they will be convinced by your emulation results.

Thank you
The e82 alone is worth the price
We forgot to say the standalone compressor features the first true nebula/acqua expander. Both consoles are fat. They sound big. They sound fat. Compressors are incredible. Reverb is featuring completely new techniques. Ebony is revolutionary in nebula/acqua lands for many many reasons.
- Those consoles are extremely rare
- The tech is vastly improved
- Choice of elements is uncommon

There is a lot of love even on those presets!

There is a picture we created for each preset
This is a representation of what I feel using that specific preset

Note: it is frequency dependent.
Normally those kind of plates are "normalized", but we kept the exact original sound and balance. Following requests we could compensate the H1. For example beta testers didn't ask for it. Let's hear more comments, for us it is really easy to adjust (really a gain adjust on h1 left kernel)
It would be nice to have in case the chance to switch it from the original to the fixed one, or it will be complex?
About the frequency dependant, yes I noticed that is not always the same db gap.
giancarlo wrote:Compressor is very good, but there are two things which make the reverb unique (...)
Despite the fact the reverb appears anonymous, this one really blends with the source, you don't understand any more what is the reverb, what is the source. (...)
Of course here we are still testing, no negative opinion on it.
But it was a good surprise to find also a very nice comp.

The E82 EQ another simple but very pleasant piece of gear.

Yes the gap is a lot less depending on frequencies
Yes it is complex to maintain two releases but we'll see what's possible

G, would it be feasible in the future to have an options window that would have check boxes for these under the hood/engine/library tweaks? This would mean you could implement a lot of different ideas in the one plugin, for example potentially removing ZL versions because the behaviour could be set per instance. You could have a drop down menu (like the notification centre on an iPhone) that provide user accessible options, writing to the XML or something. Just thinking aloud.

I haven't tried Ebony yet, as I am in the middle of a mix (almost done) and I don't want to start from scratch (as I know I would if I listen)

yes we'll do it in our future installers

About the left/right gain adjustment, there isn't a gold rule and a "perfect value".

For example the smallest decay is featuring the following peak levels

EARLY
left: -48.2
right: -43.7

so apparently the worst case is 4.5 dB
ANYWAY the same tail is featuring a smaller difference

LATE
left: -61.4
right -58.6

it means that the real difference is not 4.5, but 2.8. Consider that both left and right are reacting to different frequencies, and setting a level higher then 2.8 could seriously unbalance those channels

On the longest decay we have

EARLY
left: -55.7
right: -53.12

LATE
left: -59
right -57.5

So level difference is 2.57 for the early, but JUST 1.5 for the late! Simply the left/right are working differently at different settings and with different decay timings. The excursion goes between 4.5 and 1.5, so possibly a safe value is around 2dB (not more then 2.5dB in any case). Possibly the engineer was balancing left and right channels later, depending on the frequency content (because the balance is very sensible to frequencies! they could be perfectly balanced depending on the audio source).

Now: we can release this sort of fix around 2 dB, no problem

169 should be similar to A100.

Remember Studer and Soundcraft are part of Harman International Industries.

Yes I would appreciate such fix to be honest!

This Ebony is some great stuff!! first I was a bit confused, and I thought you packed in too much. actually this trend with putting 6 eqs, 17 compressors and 39 preamps + consoles in one package is a bit overwhelming and confusing.... but thats another story.

After getting my head around this I see a pretty versatile Reverb, considering that it is just one plate , easy and fast to tweak, with a great sound!!

Interesting eqs and the comps seem to reach more and more perfection with each release! Now I would love to see Aquamarine be redone :D but lets wait another few month to see the tech progress even more before doing that 8-) 8-) 8-)

great stuff guys!

ps. is there a video of the live event for people who missed it?

I think that Ebony will become easily my go-to vocal strip.
After an Orange instance it's a killer.

As a send/return reverb effect, is anyway better to use the entire channel strip instead the separated reverb IMO.
The filters and the EQ (and sometimes the comp) are absolutely required to reach a plausible vintage sound.
The only downside is the CPU weight, but at this point we are used to it ;)

An EBONY REV BALANCED PACK is available for Win users.
It installs a gain correction of the reverb, overwriting the old reverb vectors. It affects both the standalone reverb and the channel strip.
