New Tape emulation from UAD is here - Studer A800

Post by mpodrug » Thu Dec 02, 2010 7:20 am

Yep it's here. One very interesting thing is review by Plec which is supposedly UAD betatester. He compared UAD plugin to CSsoundmaster R2R and he give fair and honest review.

Read here:

My suggestion: get them both :D

Very nice review, although I truly believe that the Tapebooster-library
is really hard to beat. The UAD also costs $349.
Plus with the R2R, you have more machines and more tape and more colors at your disposal.

yes I feel a bit left out I sold my UAD card 3 weeks ago...but then I remembered that I never really liked any of the plugin sounds...so why should the Studer be any different...even Plec says when driven it sounds like a plugin...so in reality just like with the FATSO - once the hype dies down people realise it still sounds like a plugin...and with 6 instances per sharc - prob gonna need to print it also unless you shell out $$$$ for a QUAD card....

...there you go ;)
First, Digi's reel tape suite was the 'ultimate' r2r
plugin, just like virsyn's tape emu.
Nomad factory recently released one as well.
They all will provide some curves, but still, the most
important thing is the saturation.
For instance, Roland can do drum-modeling, but samples
will always sound better, because it's simply
the closest thing to the actual source.
That's why cdsoundmaster wins for me.

I found curious in video demonstration of sound, is good, I read a review of Plec, very interesting the points raised. for the universe synt, the sound is fantastic, more has natural limitations of the emulation. I remember Recordings I made on tape, and I hated that comes and goes, the sound was fat also masked, and I remember that channels 1 and 24 which were the ends of the tape, coach advised him to put silly things, shaker and dirt, why were the channels which had error sometimes. I like the weight of tape and definition of acute, that are prettier than the acute digital, more I think it's good various tools available.
I'm worried about not having anything to record with so many samples per second and tools in war, the concern is good and thats a fact, We must be vigilant for major releases. More we must be attentive to the music industry, that is not going well, a lot going on behind the scenes. Sometimes the studio equipment not if pays, more that's another story.
Now I hope the new releases cdsoundmaster, control of bias would be cool.

Just to make things clear.. I'm not a beta tester. :)

I'd really like to see people who own both write down their experiences and post here and on the UAD forum. These were my initial findings and gut reaction comparing them, but I'm not saying I'm right about it or that I will feel the same way in two months time.

Just today I needed to "focus" a few guitar tracks, and the R2R Studer sounded a lot better for this than the UAD Studer, no matter how I set them.

In some ways I get the same feel from the UAD Studer as with Slate VCC. It changes the sound but in some way doesn't seem to be a part of it like when using R2R or Alex B...

Hi Plec - I have always felt like this regarding any algo saturation and most compression processes...in that it weakens/degrades the source sound as if there is a 'veil' over the sound-a cartoon impression of saturation or compression...
Analogue processing becomes a part of the sound and transforms it...retaining or increasing the presence and punch...
Nebula processing is the closest to analogue sounding because as you say - it sounds natural and part of the sound...adding to it as opposed to degrading it...

I recently heard an audio example of R2R Studer+Tapebooster next to the UAD STuder on drums and immediately got that same impression that I describe above...it sounded 'quite' convincing but still had that plugin sound-just like VCC...

FWIW I completely agreed with your UAD review post...

Apart from Nebula I still haven't heard a plugin which doesn't have a digital print. It would surprise me if that would be the uad studer plug.
