The Nebula tip of the month (#14 - March 2011)

The UP parameter

UP is a secret parameter to you can add into your master .XML file. This feature is undocumented and officially unsupported, and it could be discontinued in the future. This UP parameter you could access even faster program rates than Nebula3PRO factory values, reaching even 1 sample! (PROGRAM RATE = 100 = 0.1 ms > about 4 samples)

You must use UP with Nebula .DDL not with Nebula Reverb .DLL. Nebula will not allow fast settings if you use long kernels or you use FREQD player. In that case you should change your kernels players from FREQD column to TIMED column using the little arrows.

1. Create a copy of Nebula.dll DDL file (not the reverb version) name it Nebula Compressors.dll.
2. Create a copy of Nebula.xml XML file (not the reverb version) name it Nebula Compressors.xml.
3. Add UP parameter into your master .XML file

Example:
<MASTER>
<MAGIC> 12gd </MAGIC>
<DATAPATH> C:\Nebula3TempRepository\ </DATAPATH>

to

<MASTER>
<MAGIC> 12gd </MAGIC>
<UP> 1 </UP>
<DATAPATH> C:\Nebula3TempRepository\ </DATAPATH>

4. Change PROGRAM RATE parameter value into your master .XML file from 2000 (factory setting) to 100.
Example:

<OFREQD> 11 </OFREQD>
<PROGRAMRATE> 2000 </PROGRAMRATE>
<EXPORTAUDIOQUALITY> 1 </EXPORTAUDIOQUALITY>

to

<OFREQD> 11 </OFREQD>
<PROGRAMRATE> 100 </PROGRAMRATE>
<EXPORTAUDIOQUALITY> 1 </EXPORTAUDIOQUALITY>

5. Load a compressor in Nebula3PRO, for example 2020 Yakuzi Comp.
6. EDIT -> GLOB -> PARAMETER: RATE S, change OFF to ON using MIX2 knob/fader.
7. EDIT -> GLOB -> PARAMETER: SMOOTH, change OFF to EXPDB using MIX2 knob/fader.
8. EDIT -> EVFS -> PARAMETER: Env Type, change from RMS17 to AVR using MIX2 knob/fader.
9. Click on EXIT, click SAVE, click on RELOAD.

With UP enable 2020 Yakuzi Comp RATE default is 0.900 ms, with UP disable 2020 Yakuzi Comp RATE default is 1.995 ms

Now load a rock/metal kick drum into your sequencer and try this settings on 2020 Yakuzi Comp for remove kick drum sustain.

ATTCK = 20/30 ms
RELS = around 300/600 ms
THRS = -35.0 (GR about 2-6 dB)
Ratio = 4:1 to 6:1
MAKP = about 2 dB (depends the GR and the audio program)
LIQDT = 50.00%

Now 2020 Yakuzi Comp, with UP, will have one complete resynthesis process for each incoming sample. The lower the value of RATE S, faster the compressor reacts. Obviously Nebula Compressors will need more CPU resources than Nebula3PRO due the high level of resynthesis.

Some compressor emulation preset have by default RATE S = PROG RATE so after enable RATE S you should decrease to minimum value possible.

We added 2020 Yakuzi Comp emulation preset as back up and RELS_2020COMP_SUPERCOMP.N2P the edited version with for UP parameters, but will not react if you don't enable UP and PROGRAMRATE parameter in Nebula master .XML and edit your file first.
