Pre/Post effects with R2R/Tapebooster?

Post by jrasia » Fri Dec 17, 2010 5:43 pm

What the general concensus;

Apply eq, compression, reverb before applying R2R/Tapebooster presets or after?
I guess either method works, but curious about other people experiences with this.

Hopefully others will share what works best for them, but I personally like using R2R/TB+ first, as a part of the virtual recording chain and then eq/compress after, treating the final mixing process as the time to add any necessary eq and compression. Since we are in digital, it doesn't require transparent compressing to tape in the recording process, we don't have to pretend to use it at that place in the DAW chain. But this doesn't mean it is wrong to do so.

If a person wishes, they could send a sound from their Nebula console preamp to an aux send compressor to mimic tracking to tape with compression (common to remain above noise floor without going over into distorting) and then back to their console from tape. But, in that case it would only make sense to simulate that process if using a transparent compressor and not for the purpose of intentionally changing the character of the sound with compression- like an intentional 1176 smack snare, which would probably make the most sense to apply during mixdown aka after R2R/TB+. I find post eq easiest because after applying R2R/TB+ to tracks I hear how tracks are coming together before making final eq decisions.
I hope that helps and other share their thoughts. There are a lot of creative ways to change the chain of events that make sense.

Usually before EQ and comp.

I usually do Preamps/Console emu then R2R/TB+ emu then other effects. Not really because it sounds better, just because that's similar to the way I would deal with a mix on a console/deck.

But there is a tactical advantage to using R2R before you start EQ'ing: the tape acts as a natural filter and will greatly reduce (or at the very least alter) the amount of HP/LP filtering you need.

I just use it in both directions, depending
on the source-material.

Individual tracks:

Preamp
Console Input
Console Send
Tape
TapeBooster+ (optional)
Console Return
EQ
Comp

These last 2 inserts may vary their position depending on the source.

I take it this is exactly how an old-school recording chain would be? Ie. 'tracking to tape' through a console.

Yes, that's correct.

A question: what do you mean with Console Send and Console Return and how do you set that up? (thanks in advance)
