Stereo AlexB Libraries

Post by powderfinger » Thu Sep 16, 2010 5:31 pm

What is the value add here? Weren't the libraries stereo to begin with?

For example, the bus libraries that I run on my stereo bus obviously keep the stereo imaging, so what does the new library add?

The difference here is each channel is processed independently. With mono programs both channels are processed the same way. These stereo programs should 'increase' the stereo image due to these differences in processing which tends to make things sound deeper/wider and more 'natural'.

they do sound AMAZING on stereo sources, but a word of warning for mastering. they make the bass stereo image blurred and less mono, which is often what you don't want.

my solution... place a HPF about 120hz on the side band in an MS EQ after the AlexB EQ :)

don't forget this comment when you'll test console emulations of other developers ;)

Curious on this one. Are there any comparative examples I can hear and make my own mind up about the 'stereo' thing ?

cheers

Or use this great tool: Brainworx bx_control v2
Also great to open OH, Rooms, Pads etc. and as meter.

So does this mean that it's not great to use on the master bus? That's primarily the way I'd envision using it.

If your bass is mono, there shouldn't be any problem. It is prefectly OK to use it on the Master Bus. These stereo programs are not adding stereo information nor doing any stereo tricks, they just process channels independently which doesn't alter your mono information but just balance. There's no need to add a HPF to the side unless your low end is stereo which is what most Mastering Engineers do anyways.

not so, on the master bus they alter the phase between left and right very slightly accross the spectrum and do alter your mono information.

once a stereo program goes thru one of these special programs then your bass is no longer *totally* mono. it is subtle. i am sure alex will confirm this. i have tested myself and heard the results. just do my HPF trick or set up a buss with your bass stuff without the eq.

maybe you like the slight effect on the bass? its really for dance music i think total mono is best.
