AlexB: Ely XComp (German Mixing/Mastering Compressor)

Post by AlexB » Fri Dec 23, 2016 6:36 pm

Hello,
the Ely XComp library released !!!

Pristine sound without compromise in signal quality, this flexible machine covers all the standards with his discrete class-A audio path design which combines a clear and open sound with a good amount of punch. It shines in many different applications, thanks to Warm mode which puts the compressor into transparency or saturation mode.
This stereo rack unit has been hardly modified to improve the DC and Audio path by improving dynamics, details and multi-dimensional sound.

The most critical, and most difficult task is to modify the unit without making changes to the original character and sound. This is achieved by the thoughtful choice of the right electronic components, and expert skills and experience in electronic engineering.

. High Quality programs with full dynamics and harmonic content
. Special light edition "le" programs (CPU friendly)
. 8 different presets
. Normal and Warm mode
. AHEAD extended
. Internal sidechain High Pass filter
. External sidechain control
. Drive control allows to set the sound from clean to fat
. Special AlexB skin
. No C.P. !

Please, check the website and download the user manual and try the Demo, it has the same audio quality and performance of the commercial release but with some restrictions.

Having now placed Ely-XComp onto several tracks [mastering], I can say ...

We have a new BEAST in the house.

Using the NORM Preset, with only HP set to 109Hz, with other settings left at load-in defaults ...

The entire mix is pushed forward, while the 'stick-outs' are pushed back ... and the whole track is held in place. [what a terrible way to describe what's happening].

At first, the change seems slightly dramatic, or a bit much ... but the solidity and depth are enticing.

Further listening ... switching out the XComp, the track feels a lose of structure and stability ... weak]. Re-Engaging, the track returns with a proud, natural, respectful authority.

I sense nothing artificial about the sound. I've not even tried to push this thing, as it seems the THRESHOLD is fairly higher than I expect.
Compression factors are like 1:1.1 to 1:1.5 and the GUI display reveals active Gain Reduction flickering. [not really watching it, other than to have noticed].

I've also called on the Ely-EQ for its beautiful Hi-SHELF, with 1/2dB at 11.7k that bloomed AIR with hints of STARS into the upper atmosphere.

I needed SURGE-EQ to expose some mid-range attitude.

A touch of CariBouMIX for its preamps, a touch of bottom and sometimes MID or Hi band active [no added gain].

CORAL was used for some early broad shaping with the SHELFS and setting back a bit of upper MIDS.

Air-EQ is serving for some fast corrections ... might stay for the gig.

I'm running it in N4

A couple other 'new goodies' that I'm experimenting with from a new programming acquaintance :o

There is a DEMO PRESET up on the AlexB site for Ely-XComp. [All Warnings with accompanying, Adult Supervision rules applicable]. Thank goodness for PB&J :P

RJHolins,

I have been very impressed with the Brainworx/Uad Elysia Alpa comp and the Elysia Museq eq.

How would you compare the AlexB Ely xcomp and Elyx eq libraries
with the Brainworx/Uad plugins?

Granted, the hardware X version are more "budget"/fewer options versions of the alpha and museq models. But what about the sonics in your view (if you had the chance to listen to them).

Thanks for any insight you may have.

I've no way to compare to Brainworx/Uad releases.

From AlexB's documentation regarding the ELY's ... there have been upgrades to certain components performed and tested ... with wn eventual capture into NEBULA libraries.

As an 'Electronics Engineer', restorations, upgrades, and repairs, are part of his Job Descript. ;)

Both the Compressor and the EQ libraries sound 'Mastering Grade'. They are clean and transparent, or charactered via levels and Preset choice.

The EQ has a good feature Preset involving the H/L Pass Filters with a special 'resonant bump' parameter. Very useful ... like highlite the bottom punch together with a nice roll-off to clean out the rumbles.

The COMP has had only one Preset [NORM] that I have tried. It sounded so good ... just haven't gotten to the others :P

More important ... AlexB provides a DEMO Preset for each product. I think it requires the Commercial Nebula releases, but it will give a hint as to the sonic possibilities.

Thank you RJ. Good reminder about the upgrades that
Alex B did to the hardware. I do not think that I will
resist Alex's libraries :D

Damn...I put the demo of Ely Comp on my mix bus...and no way I'm not getting this. It's a must. Grabs the peaks with no mercy in the same time adding overall power to the sound. Transparent...very transparent. With how much it can suppress the peaks...it's hard to believe.
I'm a freak when it comes to mix bus...constantly searching for the sound in my head...compressed but yet dynamic.
This one is a strong contender to be the last in the chain.
Mr. Alex - great job. I don't have idea what sort of modifications you've done but I tried Plugin Alliance version and was not impressed at all. :D

It means no copy protection. A few of Alex's libraries require authorization, but most don't.
