The HF cut is perfect, and naturally focuses the audio in an analog-sounding, warmed-up fashion.

Pretty sure this is just what the hardware does, and after that it's a matter of taste.

In my experience, if you're trying to get a smooth full midrange translation of your mix, rolling off the high frequencies in a natural way helps bring out this quality. If you don't love it you can compensate with Green and a high shelf in the upper echelons. This imparts a smoother character than no process, glueing everything together in a cohesive way.

I like the high end as well - nice and smooth and pushes the focus slightly down in the midrange, which can be a good thing on bright vocal or guitar recordings.

If you're worried about it dulling things too much, try a nice air boost at 15-25kHz pre-compressor. The compressor will 'push' the boost back down into the meat of the vocal and glue it together a bit, making it easier to get away with large air boosts. The midrange should still sound full with the mild softening up top (sometimes a big high boost can leave vocals sounding too thin in the upper mids, and focused too high in the sound field).

Try the Sum 100 Line Hot, mode 100 and turn both EVEN and ODD controls to +12dB. Put THAT on your 2bus once you think you have it sounding good...

Just picked this up - I was considering the Softube version but I'm glad I got this. And the GUIs are beautifully put together. They look great on my screen.

Still learning about this compressor and Tim's other ones, they feel very deep. Question for anyone in the know - the Gain slider/knob, is that actually sampled gain increase from the unit or just basic DAW gain?

Bought it this night with BF discount and have to say: Wow sounds incredible!

Also did some tests on the Master Bus. With Preamp program in 1st slot, and 2nd slot slow compressor program with slow release and GR kissing the needle - sounds really good and I have the impression also widens the stereo image a bit.

Definitive a compressor worth to dig into. Thanks Tim!

Sorry, searched but didn't find- what is the difference between the Linear & regular preset again?
Also I'm using the new skin & the needle is jumpy on the comp. Is this normal?

This is the thread you're looking for! viewtopic.php?f=13&t=30246 (linear is simply not adding the high freq roll off that is indigenous to the hardware, or normal preset, it can be quite a useful option at times, an alternative tone)

As for the meters, I don't even bother, I've given up on Aq/Neb meters long time ago (usually there's considerable audible compression before any visual indication of it)...

Actually it's had the benefit of improving my ears, also just watching the needle movement on a good VU plugin like Klanghelm's VUMT often aids much more than most AA metering to date, at least in my experience...

Thanks,

I mention the meters because I thought I heard they were being improved with each release. These are the worst I've seen them. These & his new Complex twitch & jump when idling w/o any audio passing through.. Don't know if it's related to the recent N4 update or something else.

Seems to be a N4 issue as the meters behave very good under N3. But I never rely on meters but on my ear.

Yes ... It´s an N4 Bug
Metering works much better under N3

I removed N3 so can't compare. I also hate looking at jumpy meters & wondering what else might be going on under the hood that might be affecting my daw or computers performance or stability.

It's a great comp either way & I enjoy using it.
