3rd party compressors for bus and 2bus

Post by darkskar » Thu Jul 02, 2015 1:24 pm

Hi there guys! I know this has been asked before but just want to know what are you using nowadays:

What third party compressors do you use for your bus and 2bus?

For snare, kick bus, drums bus, drums paracomp, bass bus, guitar bus, vocal bus, 2bus, 2bus para comp, master, etc..

I am doing metal and I'm just wondering what works for you and what do you recomend me.

I know 1176+LA2a are good for bass.
Maybe A*I 2500 for de drum bus.
660 and LA2a good for vocals.

For 2bus I have read here good words about this combo vs slate VBC:
Cupwise Slick 9k Compressor + Tim Petherick TNT Lim + STN LApreA Gain Stage

I have read good words too about Smooth 609A BusComp, Signaltonoize STN Powered Bus, and about DME from signaltonoize too. And from Fenix and Rayphlex.

Opinions? :D

Thanks, I already have the OptoA3, I think its good on vocals and bass, maybe I try it in some paracomp in 2bus.

Well, the 2254 (Alex's) is renowned as a 2bus compressor, but I also use Alex's API525 which works really well also, because unlike the hardware (which has a super fast attack and so is not so useful for 2bus duties) the Neb version has a variable attack :)

Thanks jpn and russianpolecat. Good ideas. I already have MFD too (Modern Flagship Dynamics) so I suppose it can be a good 2bus too.

For metal, S*L and A*I compression can bring a nice aggression and tone.

Alex's N54 programs are also killer just for the tone, but the timing behavior probably wouldn't suit the majority of metal tracks.

Try the demos of the N54 and A5D and see if you feel the mid coloration suits your music. Depending on the song, I love both or either on guitar bus as well to add thickness to the lower mids.

Gemini also has a 2500 library, which I often use just for the driven preamp stage.
