S*L panner (4.5 Law)

Post by void » Mon Sep 05, 2011 9:49 am

Any difference using this in a nebula instance compared to just changing the pan law in your DAW? Im thinking it is probably different given its modelled on the pan pot on the console. So, you run this on every channel? Does it have to be run live or can it be part of a rendered chain? thanks..

I think the panner does more harm than good in most cases. I wouldn't get too hung up on it. :ugeek:

Might be worth re considering if, like me, you are using protools 8 or earlier. This archaic (how did it EVER become such a standard??!!?) piece of software has its pan law fixed at 2.5db, you cannot change it.

What I dont know is, if this means that the S*L panner at 4.5db will work, or not have any effect at all becuase of the fixed pan law. Worth finding out I reckon...

First, that S*L panner is not a real S*L panner. It is an analog device which Alex built, called "precision analog panner". He modified it to different pan-laws, sampled it and bundled it to the consoles which had that specific pan-law. That's why the panner of the MBC (A*I) is identical to the panner in the MWC (Rupert N**e). The device has nothing to do with the console itself, it doesn't carry any of its sound character.

Second, it does more than just changing pan law in your DAW, namely phase distortion depending on pan position and transient round-off (lots !). That leads to a different stereo image. It can be amazing on anything roomy, but I found it way to smeary on percussive sources.
