authentic analogue signal path emulation?

Post by garyk » Sun Jan 02, 2011 2:22 pm

I never got the chance to work with analogue coming up as I did in the 90s. So I'm not sure if what I'm implementing is an authentic reproduction of the analogue way.

On a typical channel I've got Nebulas running:
Preamp
Console
Tape
Saturation

(rendering 'cos we ain't gots no server farm edition yet!)

Console
comp
eq
reverb (send)

I believe that analogue guys typically used to record through the console pres to tape, then play back from the tape for mixing using desk eq, outboard compression and bus reverb. I think I've done that above, especially using two consoles, but I really am just going on supposition really. Am I right?

thanks

ps my actual pre is a Grace so it doesn't get in the way.

Sorry Zaminx, I don't get it. Why the tape before the console? Maybe I'm overcomplicating things? Could you please explain?

Because in the typical analog environment, sound was recorded thru preamp to a tape machine. The tape machine outputs were then connected to a console line inputs.

Oh thanks. Looks like I did over complicate. But if the preamps were on the desk, why aren't we adding in an extra instance of Nebula for the desk at this point?

If I use the AlexB console emulation then it has the desk Mic Pres and line inputs sampled.
