VU meter

Post by babiuk » Fri Dec 02, 2011 11:12 pm

I saw this image of a VU meter in Reaper forums:

I´ve been searching here but I don´t understand what is this.
Is a VU plugin? Or is something from Acusticaudio for Nebula only? Or how can I get it?

I did google but no founds...

It seems Vintage Meter of PSP Audioware.
I think it's a photoshop makeup
I suggest, for VU meters, the skins menu on this site
Maybe there's something that you like there
VintageMeter is free but quite old
If you are on pc no problem
On mac there's a vst but no intel, ppc only
I suggest Satson of Sonimus

SatSon is great because besides of the VU it has trim, sweet filters and a bus plugin with different types of crosstalk. Anyway, I'm using Klanghelm VU a lot lately. Is cheap as chips, the GUI looks nice and works perfect as a standalone app (I really like to use it while I'm tracking with my mixer).

Both, Klanghelm and SatSon, are really precise in VU behaviour.

That is a Nebula skin that never really got finished actually. It has no controls and no HUD window on it, obviously. There are even a few different background colors. I talked to Giancarlo about the possibility of slimming it down into an Acqua meter to demonstrate the flexibility of Acqua. I would say Giancarlo's feeling was that it would be too heavy (the resource footprint) to be acceptable for metering, which makes sense: the whole Nebula engine is a lot of overhead for such a task.

I have all the slides and everything but in earnest neither the time nor the inclination to write it up in something C-ish. I will see if I can locate the files if someone wants to use them; I don't remember how many steps the needle was but it's a ton (I was playing with the new metering engine at the time). I do have a copy of the theme (you could copy the .DLL and make a NebulaMeter.DLL if you really wanted to use it for some reason) which I can also post. You wouldn't want to use it on your Nebula or NebulaReverb instances, though, because you'd have to hand edit the .INI to get out of it (which is why I didn't post it once upon a time).

ETA: The original VU meter this image was edited from was a TEAC.

As for now the far best VU-meter to be found seems to be VUMT at http://www.klanghelm.com. It is not free but not expensive either. And it even works MAC and PC.

Yeah, Ive just been using it and its perfect! Its £5 for * sake... Ive just drunk more than that in Ale!

I'm demoing The TB plugin too but not sure how much I will use it to be honest.

Anyway, anyone wanting a good VU meter should get that Klanghelm one.

I cant imagine what more it needs apart from better skins! I only use the default one which looks good enough.

Ive been using the meter to re-mix 4 songs and its been a great help with Nebula.

So, what are these new features?

The Klanghelm VU is excellent, can't imagine what new features it actually needs, if any!

Incorporating it directly into Nebula somehow would be pretty amazing though ..
