PC Replacement Advice

Post by Puranon » Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:16 pm

I need to go for a 64bit replacement DAW

Is the AMD PhenomII x6 comparable to the Intel I7 for heavy Nebula duties?

I believe the i7 2600k (sandy bridge) has a better price/performance ratio then any of the AMD cpu's. It's very easy to overclock and stays nicely cool under load. If you go for the 2600k, make sure you buy a B3 (recent) motherboard. I just upgraded my system, and the i7 SB is running very nicely at 4.8Ghz.

Thanks. What kind of Nebula performance are we looking at with that chip and 16GB RAM?

I'm looking in terms of AlexB Console and R2R instances.

I get it now on the I7 vs PhenomII. What RAM for Overclocking?

How are the Gigabyte boards?

RAM speeds are far less important. You can probably buy any 1600MHZ sticks that are from a reputable brand (and preferably in the "supported list" of your motherboard.) I've read good things about the gigabyte boards.
I don't use a firewire audio interface but if you do, it's important to look for a board that has a TI firewire controller.

Double NIC adapter is a good add on for use Nebula Server. Some Gigabyte mainboard already have it.
