I use them for Room or Overheads mostly. But they excel/are best known on guitar & vocal. Love the sound, smooth but cut thru a mix.

You're talking about good ole expander/gates & compressors capable of negative ratios. For positive ratios a "Compressor" lowers dynamics above a threshold. Powered-Bus has a "emphasis" EQ curve that is commonly used across a wide range of content. If this is across the mix bus from the start, it saves you from having to adjust individual channel curves so drastically.
